The team first match in Milan on May 15, 1910 instead of Italy defeated France with a score of 6-2. Some turmoil kept the players of Pro Vercelli, the best team in the league, from the game. At the end of the game, the players threw packets of cigarettes as a reward some of the 4,000 spectators. The Italian team (2-3-5): De Simoni, Varisco, Cali; trating solely, Fossati, Capello, Debernardi, Rizzi, Cevenini I, Lana, Boiocchi. First captain of the team was Francesco Calì
The first success came in an official tournament with the bronze medal at the 1928 Summer Olympics held in Amsterdam. After losing the semi final against Uruguay, a victory against Egypt secured third place 3:11 in competition.
After declining to attend the first World Cup (1930, in Uruguay), the Italian national team won two consecutive editions of the tournament in 1934 and 1938, led by coach Vittorio Pozzo and thanks to the genius of Giuseppe Meazza, one of the best Italian players of all time.

Italy is one of the top teams in international football and the second most successful national team in the history of the World Cup with four national titles (1934, 1938, 1982, 2006), only one fewer than Brazil. This strips them a European Championship (1968) may be added to an Olympic football tournament (1936) and two (former) Central European International Cups.
The traditional color of the national team (as all Italian teams and athletes) is azure blue (Azzurro, in Italian), due to the "Azzurro Savoia" (Savoy Black), traditionally the color of the royal dynasty which unified Italy in 1861 joined and managed the official standard of the President of the Italian Republic.
